Students participating in the summer university program organized by Balassi Institute and Kodolányi János University College can study the Hungarian language at three levels: basic, intermediate and advanced. In addition, the lectures (offered in both Hungarian and English) as well as the field trips are designed to introduce to them different aspects of Hungarian culture and civilization.

The aim of the 100-lesson-language course at beginner level is that students should be capable of understanding the simplest information occurring in everyday conversations and expressing their thoughts and intentions in a similarly simple form. At intermediate and advanced levels, after a thorough placement test assessing the students' writing and oral skills, the courses start by systematizing their grammatical and lexical knowledge. Following this, the courses extend the conversational topics and grammar at a more advanced level. Students finishing the advanced course can be expected to be able to conduct a longer conversation in Hungarian, not only about essential topics of everyday life, but also about culture, economics, politics and contemporary problems.

Students are provided with course books and useful course materials. Modern interactive teaching methodology is supported by specialized books, dictionaries, video and audio cassettes.

The Hungarian language lessons are combined with lectures on Hungarian history, music, folk and fine arts, gastronomy as well as on the country's special position in Eastern Central Europe. The field trips connected to the lectures assist in putting the theory into practice.
